"Biomass fiber" will become the main direction for the future development of the textile industry

On September 20th, the Business Club published Issue 150, featuring a special report on the Oriental Technology Forum's Workshop on Biofibres and Biochemical Materials. The event took place on June 17 at the Shanghai Huxing Science and Technology Library, organized by Donghua University. The conference focused on the development trends of biomass fibers and biochemical materials, addressing fundamental scientific issues and key technologies in the ecological preparation of raw materials, green processing techniques, and major technological challenges. The goal was to establish an interdisciplinary platform that supports innovation and collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions. Experts highlighted the importance of creating new types of bio-based materials that could replace petroleum resources, aiming to drive industrial upgrades and support sustainable development in the textile and chemical fiber sectors. The 150th Academic Symposium, hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Fiber Material Modification, took place from June 16 to 18 at the same venue. Nearly 50 experts from China, Singapore, and the U.S. engaged in in-depth discussions around the theme of "Biomass Fiber and Biochemical Raw Materials." Academicians Ji Guobiao, Yu Mingfang, Sun Jinliang, Jiang Shicheng, and Professor Sun Gang from UC Davis were among the key participants. Xu Mingzhi attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech emphasizing the significance of this field for future development. Discussions centered on topics such as the ecological preparation of biomass fiber raw materials, efficient green processing methods, new applications of biomass fibers, and the challenges and opportunities in their development. Presentations covered a wide range of subjects, including the application of natural polymers in textile processing, advancements in textile fiber process engineering, and the development of bio-nanocellulose. Experts from various institutions, including Wuhan University, the University of Nebraska, Tianjin Polytechnic University, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shared insights on cellulose, marine, and hemp fibers, as well as the potential for biomass-derived diesel fuel and broader industrialization prospects. During the meeting, experts reached several key conclusions. They agreed that biomass fiber will become a central direction for the future of the textile industry, driven by global oil resource constraints and the need for sustainable alternatives. The potential of renewable, biodegradable materials is becoming increasingly clear, and green fiber technologies are set to lead the next wave of innovation in the chemical fiber industry. Experts also emphasized the importance of achieving efficient resource use, eco-friendly technology, and flexible product designs in the future of biomass fiber. They noted that this field aligns closely with national strategic goals and has long-term developmental significance. Research should focus on integrating production, education, and research, promoting sustainable practices and comprehensive planning across raw material sourcing, product development, and utilization. Some experts suggested adopting a diversified approach to biomass energy development, combining mature technologies like viscose fiber production with innovative methods to enhance competitiveness and solve conversion challenges. Others advocated for full life cycle assessments to ensure environmental, economic, and energy sustainability. They recommended that the government clearly define and standardize “biofiber and biochemical raw materials” in its energy strategy, implement supportive policies, and accelerate industrialization efforts. Finally, experts stressed the need for convergence in raw material selection, technology integration, and market application. They called for improved pre-processing of biomass materials, the establishment of a biomass conversion system based on natural cellulose, and the development of high-performance fibers to support industrial growth. Multi-disciplinary cooperation was seen as essential, offering a path for innovation and a strategic choice for China’s fiber industry. Continued research into biomass fiber resources, pre-treatment methods, and advanced synthetic fiber technologies is crucial for long-term success.
