Ben Wang's March 11 hearing has sparked a conversation about high-heeled, pointed shoes—once seen as a symbol of elegance and femininity. But for 18-year-old Ms. Zhang, these fashionable shoes have become a source of pain and regret. What started as a daily comfort has now led her to the operating table, as the shoes she adores have quietly taken a toll on her health. Dr. Yu Guangrong, head surgeon and director of the Department of Orthopedics at Tongji Hospital affiliated with Tongji University, expressed concern: “Wearing the wrong shoes has become the main cause of hallux valgus in young women, leading to irreversible foot deformities.â€
Hallux valgus, commonly known as "bunion," is a prevalent foot condition, especially among women, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:20. It occurs when the big toe angles outward, while the base of the big toe turns inward, creating a bump that resembles a “bony snakehead.†While genetics play a role—about 50% of patients have a family history of the condition—Dr. Yu noted a growing trend of young women without a genetic predisposition developing the issue. Miss Zhang is one such case. She not only suffers from pain but also desires to restore the appearance of her feet to be able to wear high heels again.
According to Dr. Yu, the design of pointed shoes contributes significantly to this problem. The narrow, triangular toe box forces the toes into an unnatural position, while the stiff upper material restricts movement. High heels further increase pressure on the front of the foot, stretching ligaments and causing long-term damage. He warned that women with a longer big toe than their second toe, or those who have bunions on both feet, are at higher risk. He advised them to avoid high heels over 4 cm and pointed shoes whenever possible.
In addition to medical advice, there are practical ways to care for your footwear. Old shoes can be repurposed to reduce waste, and keeping them well-maintained helps extend their life. Choosing breathable, antibacterial socks can prevent odor and keep your feet fresh. For summer, it’s important to avoid shoes that may cause discomfort or injury. If your shoes get moldy, proper cleaning is essential. And if you're pregnant, opting for flat shoes might not always be the safest choice. Even sports shoes have hidden functions that you might not know about. Lastly, if your high heels make noise, there are simple tricks to reduce the sound. Taking care of your feet and choosing the right shoes can go a long way in preserving both your health and style.
