What else can milk, corn, and soy do besides being eaten? They can be used to make a cozy quilt! This might sound surprising, but I actually saw quilts made from fibers extracted from milk, corn, and soybeans. It's hard to believe, but the softness and comfort of these quilts are real. Recently, I had the chance to try out these unique quilts at Mercury Home Textiles in Bao’an. The store manager, Mr. Li, gave me a detailed explanation of several eco-friendly bedding options that are popular this winter.
Corn fiber: the keyword is “anti-allergyâ€
Corn fiber is produced by using lactic acid derived from fermented corn starch to create a biodegradable synthetic fiber. This fiber is then filled into the core of the quilt. When you wrap yourself in it, you feel the soft and fluffy texture. Corn fiber has excellent moisture absorption and heat retention properties. You don’t have to worry about it being too thin or not warm enough compared to wool. It also resists odors and has antibacterial and anti-allergic properties, ensuring a hygienic sleep experience.
Mercury Home Textiles recommends: Corn fiber is easy to wash and dry, and it also has radiation protection and anti-static properties. If you often use a computer in bed, a corn fiber quilt might be a great choice for you.
Soy fiber: the keyword is “health careâ€
Soy fiber is made from soybean meal after oil extraction, and through a new bioengineering process, globulin is transformed into fiber. The core of the quilt made from soy fiber feels as soft as a blend of silk and cashmere. Its moisture absorption is similar to cotton, but its breathability is much better. It also provides warmth comparable to wool because it contains various essential amino acids for the human body. This makes soy fiber beneficial for health and skin care.
Mercury Home Textiles recommends: Soy fiber is soft, smooth, wrinkle-resistant, and quick-drying. However, it’s best to avoid washing it frequently, as it may damage the fiber. During maintenance, avoid direct sunlight and opt for drying and ventilation instead.
Milk fiber: the keyword is “beautyâ€
Milk fiber has a pH level of 6.8, which is slightly acidic—matching the natural pH of human skin. It also contains a large amount of animal protein amino acids, making it highly skin-friendly.
In addition to over 10 types of amino acids that are beneficial to the body, milk fiber also contains natural moisturizing factors found in proteins. This helps nourish and protect the skin. Combining the hygroscopicity of natural fibers with the breathability of synthetic fibers, milk fiber offers excellent softness, breathability, wrinkle resistance, and durability.
Mercury Home Textiles recommends: Milk fiber is soft, elastic, and highly absorbent, making it ideal for those who want a comfortable and luxurious sleeping experience.
