From December 27 to 31, 2009, the research outcomes of three key projects under the HEMA series—namely "Research on New Batch Intermittent Ammonia Treatment Technology and Equipment," "Bulletproof Wood Ceramics Project," and "Comprehensive Application of Military Food"—were officially approved by a panel of experts from the PLA General Logistics Department, the Ministry of Oil, the China Textile Industry Association, and the China Institute of Food Science and Technology. The expert committee, composed of renowned scholars from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and industry leaders, recognized that the overall technical level of these three projects reached international advanced standards.
The development of the new batch liquid ammonia treatment process and equipment has introduced an environmentally friendly method for modifying natural cellulose fibers, yarns, and fabrics such as hemp. This technique reduces crystallinity, alters internal fiber structure, and lowers the modulus, while preserving the inherent properties of natural cellulose. It also enhances structural and functional characteristics, effectively addressing long-standing challenges in hemp textile processing and significantly broadening its application scope.
For hemp yarn, the liquid ammonia treatment improves elongation at break and reduces flexural modulus, making it more suitable for textile manufacturing. For hemp fabric, the treatment enhances dimensional stability, increases wrinkle recovery, improves dyeing depth and uniformity, and boosts luster, thereby significantly enhancing overall performance.
The Bulletproof Wood Ceramics Project utilized hemp straw core powder as a raw material, employing optimized non-gel hot pressing and injection molding techniques to produce wood ceramic billets with controllable density, uniform cross-section, and a single-peak pore distribution. Through high-temperature carbonization and reaction sintering, the green body was transformed into high-performance silicon carbide (SiC) wood ceramics, suitable for use in individual bulletproof applications. These ceramics meet the requirements of military standard GJB5478-2006 for I and II bullet-proof panels, with weights of 350 grams and 300 grams respectively. The preparation technology has reached pilot production levels, offering improved mechanical and ballistic performance. The project also promotes the high-value utilization of low-cost, recyclable biomass resources, combining high performance with cost-effectiveness, delivering both military and economic benefits.
In addition, the comprehensive application of hemp seeds in military foodstuffs involved a detailed analysis of the distribution, morphology, physical and chemical properties, and nutritional components of major hempseed varieties in China. This study provided foundational data and scientific support for the rational utilization of hempseed resources. For the first time, it developed military-specific products such as hempseed hamburger compacts, energy bars, solid drinks, and protein beverages, enriching the range of field rations. These products are now used in outdoor sports, triathlons, camping, emergency reserves, and survival kits. Notably, the Hemp Compression Biscuits have been included in the Beijing Red Cross disaster relief food catalog.
