Hello friends!
It’s been such a delight to see all the amazing things you're creating with the Building Block Dress book already! With Halloween just around the corner, I know many of you are busy crafting costumes. But you're still finding time to sew dresses here and there, and some of you are even using the book’s techniques to adapt patterns for your costumes—just as I hoped you would! (I’m doing the same thing. You'll see soon enough.)
Anyway, I've heard from quite a few of you that your kids are just as thrilled with the book as you are, and it seems like many of your daughters are really getting into the design process. I absolutely love this because it’s exactly how I first became fascinated with sewing. My mom and I worked together on a lot of the clothes she made for me. When you collaborate to pick a pattern or style, choose fabrics and trims, and put everything together, it gives kids a sense of empowerment and lets them express their creativity—even if they aren’t particularly interested in sewing itself. I didn’t start sewing until college, but I had a good understanding of clothing and design because I accompanied my mom to the fabric store, touched the fabrics, and learned which ones worked best for different styles.
Working together also increases the chances that your kids will actually wear the outfits you make for them since they feel personally invested in what you create. Keeping that in mind, I asked a few friends to share what they’ve been making with their daughters. Here’s what they’ve been up to.
Allison encouraged her daughter to draw her dream dress for her sixth birthday, and she did! The little artist even specified which prints she wanted on her dress, and Allison managed to track down fabrics that matched her “vision.†Isn’t it great to have such a talented sourcing team? Here’s the initial sketch and the final dress.

Doesn’t Allison’s daughter look thrilled with her finished dress?

So sweet. I’m sure she’ll remember this moment forever.
Melani’s daughter also drew a dress for her mom to sew. They couldn’t find fox fabric (we suggest this one), and a few adjustments were made before the final version was completed. But I just love seeing how kids imagine their clothes, don’t you?

Melani shared with me, “My daughter and I are working on her Halloween costume using the Building Block Dress. She wants to be a ‘nature queen,’ and has given me specific instructions! We’re still having so much fun with the book!†I can’t wait to see where they go next.
Leslie said her book arrived just in time for her to sew dresses for their annual family photos, which are happening this week. She mentioned that she “curated†fabrics from her stash that would suit the dresses. What a fantastic idea! Kids can easily get overwhelmed by too many choices (don’t we all?), and this way she could ensure that they picked something everyone would be happy with. By the way, the girls were so excited to learn they’d be featured on the blog that they redrew their dresses. So here you have the preliminary and final design sketches. How cute is that! I’m sure their family photos are going to be adorable. I love how each girl gets a dress of her own design, yet they still coordinate!

I hope this book inspires you and your children or grandchildren to create together too! Are you planning any projects yet? Let us know all about them. We'd love to hear.
